A few years ago I was introduced to Ubisoft Battle Tag, a vest and gun combination laser tag game for home use. Unlike alternatives, it did not require a smartphone and the sensors were on your body, not unrealistically on the gun. Each pack comes with a wireless receiver that works for hundreds of feet and supports 16 players (but can easily be modded to support at least 20). The software comes with your traditional, team versus team, every-man-for-himself, tag, etc, games.
Sadly, however, Ubisoft has discontinued the Battle Tag line and you can only buy the packs on eBay or similar resale websites for grossly expensive prices. I’m not sure why they discontinued them as these are the most fun way I’ve ever played laser tag with my friends outside of a professional establishment.
Despite the dangers in breaking your expensive smartphone, the upcoming phone-based laser tag games will hopefully surpass the Battle Tag legacy and become my new favorite way to play laser tag with my friends at home.
